This week, outgoing Minister Brekelmans announced that the Netherlands is sending two soldiers to Greenland.

Earlier, the other countries said they would also be sending personnel. Belgium did so as well, but that country is notably not mentioned by Trump. "It is not yet clear whether Trump has forgotten our country or if, for some reason, we have been given an exception," writes the VRT about it.

Het is een volkomen realistisch scenario waarin hij, om de schijn van stabiliteit te bewaren en het Wereldkampioenschap te laten doorgaan, dergelijke bedoelingen tijdelijk zou ontkennen, en daarna, na afloop van het wereldwijde sportevenement, over zou gaan tot machtsmiddelen. The initiative is addressed to the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and asks it to clearly inform FIFA and the U.S. president that sport must not legitimize violations of international law. Although this is a civic action without institutional backing, its political message should not be underestimated: the idea of a boycott is already circulating in the European public sphere. The initiator of the petition is Dutch citizen activist Rob Wilstra.

The petition does not call for an immediate boycott, but sets a condition: if an American takeover of Greenland were to occur, the Netherlands should withdraw from the World Cup. In doing so, the World Cup is directly linked to Washington’s foreign policy and becomes a matter of values, not merely a sporting issue.
