In front of the Russian Embassy in The Hague, a memorial was unveiled on Saturday, November 8, for the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
STATEMENT FROM THE PETITION ORGANIZER
Perhaps you have already heard about this in the news.
His widow, Yulia Navalnaya, and city councillor Robert Barker unveiled the plaque together with us. It bears an inscription in Dutch, English and Russian: “Alexei Navalny (1976–2024), died for freedom.”
This initiative came about thanks to this petition.
The petition, which called for the street in front of the embassy to be named after him, was signed more than 86,000 times by all of you.
Since renaming the street ultimately proved impossible, even after we tried to convince the municipality to look beyond the existing rules, the city offered this memorial and bench as an alternative. We gladly accepted. Those present, and I as the initiator of this petition, expressed our gratitude for this sign of support for the Russian struggle for freedom.
Without your signatures, none of this would have been possible. So thank you all very much.
