Amsterdam School Museum Het Schip, the museum of architecture, art and public housing, is threatened in its existence. This unique museum is located in the recently beautifully restored public housing complex Het Schip from 1919, designed by Michel de Klerk.

Petition

We

admirers of the Amsterdam School and interested in the history of social housing

establish that:

  • that based on performance, planning and budget, the AFK advised a positive sum of €435.000

  • that, due to a lack of funds, only €287,115 could be allocated

  • that, if the basic exploitation of € 435,000 per year is not covered, other funds will no longer be able to support the museum for the realisation of exhibitions and activities and the maintenance of the digital platform Wendingen, the online database of the Amsterdam School.

  • The continuation of the museum is guaranteed by granting the missing amount (€147,885 per year).

  • This beautiful cultural heritage is a visiting card for Amsterdam. The museum serves a broad target audience of national and international visitors and helps carrying out the policy spreading tourism across the city.

and request

the ‘college van burgemeester en wethouders’ (executive board of the municipality) to allocate the entire positively assessed amount to the museum.

(in English below banner)

Museum Het Schip is wereldberoemd.

THE ANSWER

The City Council of Amsterdam has decided to implement motion 1412 and to make an appropriate amount available for Museum Het Schip (and the Amsterdamse Bostheater), because these are institutions with a special cultural-historical value. They are places that only come into their own with an appropriate programme that reaches a broad public.

Museum Het Schip is world famous. It is housed in a beautiful housing complex in the Spaarndammerbuurt that was designed by Michel de Klerk. The museum tells a multitude of stories, and allows visitors to share in a rich history. Stories not just about designing, bricks and mortar, but also about social history. About housing construction and public housing, whose thinking went hand in hand with ideals such as the pursuit of equality and elevation. It is a place where the past connects with the present. Museum Het Schip also fulfils a network function on building in the style of the Amsterdam School. Many school classes are given guided tours. The museum collaborates with museums in Germany and Japan and is supported by the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, for example.

For Museum Het Schip, the AFK assessed the application as realistic and appropriate. The requested subsidy has been partially granted because the budget for the heritage discipline within the budget for the Kunstenplan is insufficient. The Municipal Executive has decided to allocate an additional budget to Museum het Schip for the period 2021-2024 of approximately €150,000 per year on average and to entrust the implementation of this to the AFK. The Municipal Executive has decided to grant an additional budget to the Museum the Ship for the period 2021-2024 of an average of approximately €150,000 per year and to entrust its implementation to the AFK.

Partly because of your actions, the majority in the City Council of Amsterdam has passed a motion to supplement the missing subsidy amount from Museum Het Schip for the next four years.
