We call on the UvA to provide permanent contemplation rooms in the ABC building and the new university library. These are quiet, inclusive spaces for reflection, prayer, and mindfulness, open to all students and staff, fostering inclusivity, well-being, focus, and a supportive academic environment.
We are UvA students, staff, and community members who value inclusive, quiet spaces for all.
Permanent contemplation rooms in the ABC building and the new library would offer accessible, inclusive areas for all members of the UvA community to pause, recharge, and find calm amidst their busy academic life. More contemplation rooms at universities has been advised by the Dutch government. Similarly, participants of a recent expert meeting organized by UvA's Central Diversity Office also agreed that this need is not yet optimally met.
We request that the University of Amsterdam establish permanent, accessible contemplation rooms in both the ABC building and the new university library. These spaces should be welcoming to all, designed for quiet reflection, prayer, or mindfulness, and maintained to ensure they remain inclusive, respectful, and supportive of the diverse needs of the UvA community.
