While the policy aims to protect against excessive work hours, it also restricts flexibility, creativity, and PhD progress. It could delay experiments, reduce scientific output, and actually create new safety risks, as some may work outside official hours. The approach doesn't address the root causes of overwork while imposing other negative effects.
An open conversation with the faculty board to discuss these concerns and explore a more balanced solution. It's crucial to consider both the safety of lab members and the flexibility needed for effective research. We believe that with input from all involved, we can find a way forward that meets both safety requirements and academic needs.
