America is hosting the FIFA World Cup this year, while at the same time the US is robbing Venezuela of its oil, suspected drug smugglers are being murdered without trial or evidence, and now Greenland is also being threatened. https://boycotnagroenland.petities.nl

who endorse the value of democracy and reject the US annexation of Greenland.

 

establish that:

  • we are increasingly in danger of accepting a world where the law of the jungle prevails, where the American president disregards the international rule of law.
  • the organization of the FIFA World Cup has become a major prestige project followed by the entire world population.

 

and request

The KNVB must issue an open letter to the International Football Association declaring that if the US seizes Greenland, the Netherlands will withdraw from the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

The KNVB must send a copy of this statement to the President of the United States via the ambassador.

In the Netherlands, a citizens’ petition has been launched calling for a boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States if the U.S. were to take over Greenland.

The initiative is addressed to the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and asks it to clearly inform FIFA and the U.S. president that sport must not legitimize violations of international law. Although this is a civic action without institutional backing, its political message should not be underestimated: the idea of a boycott is already circulating in the European public sphere. The initiator of the petition is Dutch citizen activist Rob Wilstra.

The petition does not call for an immediate boycott, but sets a condition: if an American takeover of Greenland were to occur, the Netherlands should withdraw from the World Cup. In doing so, the World Cup is directly linked to Washington’s foreign policy and becomes a matter of values, not merely a sporting issue. Volgens Laurien Crump is de situatie uniek in de geschiedenis van het bondgenootschap. "De leider van de NAVO die een grondgebied van een eigen, kleinere bondgenoot wil annexeren, dat is zonder precedent", zegt ze. "Hoe kun je nog van een bondgenootschap spreken als bondgenoten elkaar niet verdedigen, maar bedreigen?" Dat NAVO-landen onderling conflicten hebben gekend, zoals Turkije en Griekenland over Cyprus, maakt de zaak volgens haar niet vergelijkbaar. "Dit is een totaal asymmetrische dreiging. De NAVO is hier eigenlijk niet tegen opgewassen." Formeel zal het bondgenootschap waarschijnlijk niet direct uiteenvallen, denkt ze. "In de veertien artikelen van het Noord-Atlantisch Verdrag is geen enkel scenario voorzien waarin een lidstaat een andere binnenvalt. Maar artikel één – geen geweld gebruiken of ermee dreigen – is door de VS al geschonden."
